Attack of the Sequel: Ranking Derivative Films

20130722-073517.jpg

Flying back from Comic-Con in San Diego, I was thinking about how much the show is more about the big budget, transmedia franchises, and how many of the sequels are derivative and boring.

So, for fun, here’s sort of a nerdy, cryptic ranking of sequels, according to my tastes. Each film in each franchise is in priority order, but the franchises themselves are not listed in my priority order:

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 546321 = Star Wars
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 213 = Godfather
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 213 = Toy Story
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 213 = Batman (C. Nolan)
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 1342 = Indiana Jones
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 13245 = Die Hard
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 12 = French Connection
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 123 = Lord
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: or 321 = of
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: or 231 = the
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: or 132 = Rings
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 32 = Iron Man
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: 12?? = Home Alone
1 then the rest tied for last = Jurassic Park
:::::::::::::::::::::: 1 then none = Jaws or any Disney or Dreamworks Animated Feature

:::::: 1-21-3-2-23-4-6-17-10
::::::::::: -15-16-12-5-8-22-7
::::::: -11-20-18-19-9-13-14 = 007 (James Bond)*

*I will list these by title in a future post

I find it interesting that Spielberg and Lucas are on here quite a lot. But their sequels were mostly written and directed by other people, becoming less and less creative and more and more derivative.

What other sequel series would you rank, and in what order? Star Trek? Pirates of Caribbean?

The Pixar Theory Timeline

Just discovered Jon Negroni who from the looks of this amazing post is brilliant. It will blow your mind.

Pixar Theory TimelineSince the initial release of The Pixar Theory, there have been countless changes and updates to the Pixar Theory timeline. Since it can get a little complicated (and nutty), I put together a new and improved outline that follows the book and includes all of the recent and upcoming Pixar movies. Enjoy!
